Pet rules in Dubai, UAE

When you move to Dubai for work or business, not only will you have to follow certain rules, but so will your pets. There are a number of requirements for keeping pets in the Emirates, non-compliance with which leads to heavy fines. Here are the main ones.

1. Your pet (particularly cats and dogs) must have an ISO or AVID microchip.

2. Vaccination against various diseases and constant observation in one of the UAE veterinary centres is mandatory. Dogs require vaccines against DHLPP (plague, leptospirosis, hepatitis and parvovirus) while cats require vaccines against FVRCP (calicivirus, rhinotracheitis, panleukopenia, parvovirus). Rabies vaccination should be given annually.

3. Certain breeds are banned in the Emirates. For example, pit bulls, Staffordshire bull terriers, Brazilian and Argentine mastiffs, Dobermans, Rottweilers, etc, are prohibited.

4. Walking outside is obligatory with a leash. Large breeds of animals must be muzzled.

5. Choose only authorised places for walking. There are a number of areas where it is strictly forbidden to take your four-legged friend for a walk. For example, Marina Walk, Jumeirah Beach Residence, the Palm and Dubai Marina.

6. When renting accommodation, be sure to check whether pets are allowed. Some neighbourhoods may not allow pets. For religious reasons, dogs are considered unclean animals, so even the landlord may be strongly opposed to having a pet.

7. Exotic animals are prohibited in the home. There are larger fines for such offences.

8. If you will be noticed for cruelty to the animal and non-compliance with the rules of care, penalties will be imposed.

9. You should not take your pet on public transport or in taxis. There are special services that will gladly take your pet to its destination.

10. Small pets are allowed for import and can be in the flat. For example, guinea pigs, hamsters, turtles, parrots. For them, there is also a requirement to provide health certificates and an import permit.
Remember that importing an animal into the UAE requires preparation of documents on the health of the pet, collection of vaccination certificates, chipping procedure, etc. It is important to familiarise yourself with the rules of transporting animals, as they may differ in some airlines. Upon arrival, it is necessary to register your pet at one of the local veterinary clinics.
