How to check a company in Dubai, UAE

When running any kind of business or looking for contractors to perform any services, there are often situations when you need to check a company for the legality of its work. And in the UAE many people face a certain difficulty: there is no single register with information about all organisations. However, before signing any serious contracts, of course, it is important to make sure that the company really exists, is officially registered and has the right to operate. Let's look at a few steps you can take to verify business information.

Every registered company must have a trading licence to operate. You can ask for a copy of it to be sent to you, then check online on the DED (Department of Economic Development) website through the "Search for Licence Information" function. Please note that trade licences are not confidential documents as they must be publicly displayed in any office or shop. It is the public's right to access or request this document. The data that can be useful from such a document is the company name, office address, registration number, licence number and the name of the manager. If an organisation refuses to share their licence information with you, it could mean that their business may be illegal.

Knowing the name of the company, you can go to the National Economic Registry website and check whether the company exists or not. Knowing the tax registration number, you can find some documents on the NER website.

If the company is registered in one of the free economic zones, there is a chance to check the licence online at the freezone registry or by email. However, fewer registers are now available and only a small fraction of FEZs can share such information.

Another option is to request a Good Standing certificate from your local registration authority. This is a certificate of good standing. It usually indicates that the organisation submits all reports and fees to the authorities and conducts legitimate activities. This serves as proof that the legal entity exists and is authorised to do business in the Emirates.

Social media can also tell you a lot about a company. You can check if they have professional profiles on Instagram, Facebook and whether it has employees represented on online platforms like LinkedIn etc. The activity, posts and long history of the page can influence your decision about the company.
